Also, don’t use all of the free submit utilities on the same day since many of them submit to the same search engines. Wait at least one week before you use the next utility. You may want to open an email account on hotmail or another of the free email services and use that email address if you plan to submit to free for all links since many send a confirmation email, or add you to a mailing list.


1. SELF-PROMOTION: This is the best place to start promoting your site. And best of all it is free to use. However, for only , you Can have your data stored for one year so that you can promote your site over and over without retyping the information. Self-promotion allows you to promote your site to over 400 different search engines, indexes, business directories, international indexes, directories and awards. < >

2. JIM TOOLS: This is another free utility that promotes your site to 400 search engines and indexes and over 200 Free-For-All (FFA) links pages. Impact of Technology in Your Online Business!

How does technology benefit your online business? If you are thinking of starting an online marketing business, or any online business of any type, you will be relying on technology more than ever. As technology evolves, so does opportunity. Just keep in mind, giving up the corporate grind to have a career that is far more flexible is within reach, with the right technology.

I just listened to a podcast on the Affiliate Buzz, which was developed by James and Arlene Martell to help others by sharing tips and information on working online. Sometimes they feature guests who can offer advice as well. This time, it was their son Justin.

Right out of high school, Justin took a summer job in a computer store. Little did he know at the time that it would lead to developing a career, as he honed his skills in computers and technology. Today, he is manager at one of the largest Canadian computer retailers. So, he knows what he is talking about.

I am going to share some of what I learned from him today. If your business relies on the Internet, read on to learn what I did.

1. The Heart of Production

It’s no surprise that the heart of any online business will be the computer. Without it, the business wouldn’t exist. Justin shared basic tips that will help you in your production. Of course, when talking about computers, that encompasses laptops and iPads as well.

First, he recommends that you get a computer with a minimum RAM of 6 to 8 GB. RAM is an acronym for random access memory and has to do with a computer’s data storage capability.

Second, Justin talked about the processor, which he recommends going with a quad core processor, when possible. This type of processor often leads to faster speeds in computing, especially when working with large processing tasks such as graphics and compression.

Of course, with all this power, comes the need for protection as well. Some of this could be found on sites such as, which offers insight on locks and cases for iPads. For laptops, find a secure case that will protect your laptop from damage when you are on the road.

2. Staying Connected on the Road

Other than a laptop, or an iPad, one of the best ways to stay connected to your business is with a smart phone. A phone is not just a phone any longer, unless of course you opt for the most basic one. However, I was told when buying mine that all phones in the near future will have to have a wireless package, so you might want to consider one just for that reason alone. If you are paying for it, you might as well have it, right?

Here are some interesting tidbits that Justin shared, regarding smart phones:

  • You can stay connected with internet access, keeping you informed of new messages, social medias, and emails
  • Many are all-in-one devices, with cameras, video, texting, Internet access, and even Google Docs and Calendar with the Androids
  • Smart phones are quicker than phones of just a couple years ago, with a dual core processor

These phones make it easy to check emails, post links to social media, and just stay connected when you are away from the office. To me, the main difference between a smart phone and a laptop or iPad, is that I carry my phone with me at all times.

3. Enough Lanes in Your Freeway

To avoid a traffic jam in your computer’s communications, make sure you have a proper router to support all the devices you have in your home office, as well as the entire home. Your router is responsible for all the devices such as the computer, iPad, smart phone, and even game systems that are in the house. If you have multiples of these, as many people do, that is a lot of toil on the router.

Justin used the analogy of a freeway. Each device uses bandwidth, therefore taking up ‘lanes’ in the system. It would be much easier to have a 6-lane freeway to handle 3000 cars, than a 2-lane road.

Find a router with a 300 bandwidth, and you should be fine. You should be able to find a decent one for around $200, give or take a few dollars. But, if it helps prevent a sluggish computer, or disconnected web calls, it is worth the extra money.

Technology offers us all a chance to have the flexibility in our careers, so we can produce more and live more at the same time. You just need to take advantage of it.

4 Common Mistakes in your OM!

If you want to attract more customers, where are you going to invest your time and money? Online marketing is the most cost-effective channel for reaching prospects and customers. However, there are definite pitfalls for first-time entrepreneurs to avoid — and I know from experience.

Over the past eight years, I’ve started several different businesses, and while I’ve created many successful online marketing campaigns, I’ve also had my own share of failures. I’ve also consulted closely with dozens of entrepreneurs over the years, and I’ve seen the same mistakes repeated again and again. If you’re not satisfied with your results from online marketing, you’re probably making one of the following mistakes.

1. Lack of focus.

Don’t “throw spaghetti against the wall” when you’re just getting started with your marketing. Many new entrepreneurs think this approach will minimize risk, but it’s usually a mistake because you probably don’t have the resources to execute well on multiple fronts. As a result, you’ll just end up with a big mess. Instead, assess your options and pick one. If that one doesn’t work, try the next one, and then the next one. Once you get something working, put everything you’ve got into it, so you gain momentum.

2. Lack of diversity.

The next big mistake is to put all of your eggs in one basket. Lack of diversity can be disastrous. For example, if you’re reliant on search engine optimization (SEO) for all of your traffic and customers, you could go out of business overnight when Google rolls out their next algorithm update. You can avoid that situation by diversifying. However, the sequence is critical. The right time to diversify is when you already have something working. Here’s why: the hardest thing to do is get something in motion, but it takes significantly less resources to keep it in motion. Remember: focus first, then diversify.

3. Not tracking results.

Perhaps the biggest mistake you can make is not tracking your return on investment (ROI) from your various marketing efforts. If you’re not tracking, you’re flying blind — and this will hurt you, whether your marketing is working or not. If you’re losing money in certain areas, you won’t know how to stop the bleeding. And if your marketing is working, then you don’t know where to reinvest for maximum growth. As John Wanamaker famously said, “Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don’t know which half.”  Fortunately, with today’s technology, tracking your ROI is easier than ever.

4. Not testing.

If you’re not continually testing, you’re leaving money on the table. Specifically, I’m recommending you implement A/B tests on your website, where you show one message to 50 percent of your website visitors, and another message to the other half. If you can boost your website conversion rates by 25 percent, you can increase your sales without increasing your marketing budget. Remember, there’s no such thing as perfect. You can always beat the control.

If you want to attract as many customers as possible and generate maximum ROI from online marketing, follow this simple 5-step marketing plan:

  1. Focus on getting one aspect of your marketing working first.
  2. Once you have one thing working, diversify to find the next one.
  3. Track your ROI, so you know where to reinvest.
  4. Follow up to convert more prospects into customers.
  5. And finally, always be testing to improve your conversion rates.

4 Things You Can Do To Keep Your Online Program on Exceed Your Marketing Goals

As the saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun, or spending money, and it’s always a good idea to have some checkpoints to keep from losing track of where you are going.  The same holds true for online marketing and managing your budget to ensure you are getting the most out of your efforts.  So what’s the best way to ensure you’re on track to meet your goals and adjust your efforts along the way?

There’s a lot of ways to look at data, from trends to year over year, month over month, search trends, and more.  The key is knowing what to do with that data and how to gain the most insight into your efforts to ensure you are on track to reach your goals for the year.  In addition to reviewing where you are against your goals, it’s also important to always be looking ahead to ensure that you’re looking at the day to day and mapping that out to meet the big picture.  To help keep you on track, here’s a list of 4 things you can do to keep your program on pace and reach or exceed your marketing goals.

1. Know your monthly pace.

And by this I mean not just month over month, but mid-month, your pace for where you will end the month, and any adjustments that need to be made to ensure you will reach your targets.  Nothing is worse than starting off a great month only to realize you’ve spend 2/3 of your budget in the first week and then needing to pull back.  Or receiving a list of SEO recommendations to find out that you forgot to add the implementations to the development schedule and they won’t be put into place for another few months.  Know where you are for the month, and know where you are going so that you can manage the monthly goals and growth rates by monitoring and understanding your monthly pace.

2. Compare your results to the past.

How does your monthly performance stack up to last month?  How about to the same month last year?  Were there key changes in your online efforts that may have impacted performance?  Did you relaunch the site, redesign the checkout process, or update lead forms to be shorter and more concise?  Keep in mind the changes you have made, make sure to note those changes, and then correlate that to the data trends from the prior month and prior year to ensure you are understanding where you are coming from and where you are going, from month to month trends, and year over year seasonality.

3. Compare your results to the past some more.

Yes, I know I just said this, but this time look at a bigger data set.  The prior points all talked about monthly pace, trends and history.  Now it’s time to look at a larger piece of the pie.  Quarterly data can be just as useful (if not more so) than looking at months individually.  In a quarter you have more data to look at and small blips get blended into the bigger picture trends.  This is also a great way to view seasonality, as often seasonal trends don’t last for just a few weeks or one month alone, but happen across several months.  By comparing quarter to quarter for prior quarter and prior year, you can get an accurate picture of how you are performing against larger search and seasonality trends.  Keep in mind as more searches shift towards mobile, reviewing performance in a larger data set can be very beneficial in learning where and how to shift your focus.

4. Be nimble.

This may be one of the most important things to remember.  All the data review for all the items listed above will do you no good whatsoever if you don’t decide to act on them.  Even if that means throwing away your plan and starting over.  It’s hard to predict where things will grow, and news and trends are always changing in the fast paced online world.  If you make a plan and stick to it, you’re likely to be left in the dust as your competitors shift and change with the market.  If your mobile traffic starts to grow at a fast rate, shift some budget into creating mobile landing pages, or ensuring that your site is mobile-friendly.  If all of a sudden your images are on Pinterest, make a Pinterest account and join in on the posting – even if you swore there was no value there.  If your customers see value there, the worst thing you can do is not to participate, as that will only isolate them.  The web is changing, and the way people get their information on a brand or company is changing as well.  It’s important that you can be nimble and change with the times.

In the long run, it’s important to take everything you’ve learned and start to plan for the year ahead as well.  While plans change, having a plan to start with is always important.  Develop a plan, but know you will likely need to adjust it as the year goes on.  Set goals, but be willing to change them based on changing trends.  And always, always make sure that your changes are supported by the data you’ve collected!

Because each county has their own regulations and because pool shoppers generally type in something like “Chesterfield County Swimming Pool Laws” or “Frederick County Swimming Pool Setbacks” you must went ahead and wrote a separate article on each county.


2. Write “Who is the Best______________?” Articles

Think about it for a second: How often, when searching for a local business, do you go to Google and type in, “Who is the best ______________ company in [my town]?”

Chances are, if you’re like most of the digital world, you’ve done this many, many times. So have your customers. In order to address this critical customer question, you may want to consider taking every major town you work in and write an article addressing this critical question. I’ve done multiple “Best of [location]” articles and every single one of them ranks on the first page of Google and have generated critical traffic, leads, and sales that have benefitted my business.

3. Write “Best of” Posts that also Review Your Local Competitors

OK, now comes the part that makes people scratch their head, but if you look at it from an intelligent business standpoint and get rid of all your “old school/secret sauce” mentality, I think you’ll get what I’m saying here.

Fact is, your potential clients are vetting you and your competitors all the time. They are going to Google and typing in phrases like “Reviews of [your competitor]” and 99.9% of the time, some awful 3rd party review site is the one controlling this conversation. I noticed this trend a couple of years ago and decided to start optimizing for my competitors keyword phrases when a prospect was vetting them online. To do this, my approach was something no one had ever done before online(I don’t say this to brag, it’s just the truth)—I made a “best of” list that included 5 competitors I respected, briefly described their company, and did NOT include myself in these “best of” lists.

4. Write “Best of” (or worst of) Posts about Related Industries to Yours

This is a tremendous technique that very, very few people do, but it works quite well. Let’s pretend you’re a real-estate agent in Austin Texas for a minute. What are some typical “best of” questions potential clients (people that are moving to Austin from another area) would ask? Here is a small list:

  • What are the best school systems in Austin?
  • What are the best restaurants in Austin?
  • What are the best neighborhoods to live in in Austin Texas?
  • What are the worst school systems in Austin?

Do you see how this works? If someone is moving to the town, they very likely want to know these things, and there is also a very good chance each person asking these questions could be a potential client for that agent.
